A Natural Iodine Source that Brings the Divine Feminine into Balance

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is an Iodine-rich seaweed and natural medicine that brings female hormones into balance.

As we’ll learn from the science, Bladderwrack deserves to be in almost every woman’s vitamin cabinet. Women’s bodies are just a bit more complicated, like a beautiful (yet finicky) high performance European sports car, they just need more attention and maintenance. Our hormones underlie our well-being in life and hormones are downstream from Thyroid function. If the Thyroid is not happy and getting what it needs, neither are we. The Thyroid needs Iodine, without sufficient dietary Iodine, our hormones become imbalanced impacting our energy levels, mood, fertility, and metabolism. Bladderwrack is an outstanding Iodine source.

This article is mostly going to focus on decoding what the human studies are saying about Bladderwrack and how this squares up with the anecdotal experiences of Biohackers online. For more of my own personal experiences, thoughts, and comparisons please see the written and video reviews in the sidebar.

 Scientific Research

On Pubmed can be found nearly 70 scientific papers about Bladderwrack, along with seven human clinical trials. We’ll delve into some of the published science here and we’ll break down what to expect from this natural medicine.

Monthly Cycle Normalizer

If you’re a woman experiencing short or irregular monthly cycles, that’s a bad sign, but it’s typically a symptom of underlying thyroid Iodine deficiency, which Bladderwrack can address as it contains 3000 micrograms of bioavailable Iodine. One of the best American research papers notes in its abstract

Intake of bladderwrack was associated with significant increases in menstrual cycle lengths

 Hormonal Anti-Cancer Hack

A small study out of the University of California, Berkeley, highlights the anti-cancer effect of Bladderwrack. The paper begins by explaining that the Rates of estrogen-dependent cancers are among the highest in Western countries and lower in the East because of estrogenic hormonal dysfunction and suggests seamoss as an effective preventative measure for women especially those at risk for estrogen-dependent diseases, such as...

  • Ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers
  • Breast cancers
  • Prostate cancer
  • Endometriosis

It concluded

These pilot data suggest that dietary bladderwrack may prolong the length of the menstrual cycle and exert anti-estrogenic effects in pre-menopausal women...
Given the vast rise of these cancers in the U.S. and our limited success with prevention and treatment, there is clearly a need for the identification of novel, non-cytotoxic chemopreventive agents.

 Lowers Cholesterol

One of the more well-established effects of it is altering cholesterol metabolism and significantly lowering plasma cholesterol levels. It’s currently undergoing a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in Victoria, Australia with 58 overweight or obese participants recieving 2000 milligrams of seaweed daily. The fact that it’s undergoing this sort of high-quality gold-standard study should make it stand out among a bunch of different promising nutriceuticals.

 Vs Diabetes

The most recent clinical trial, done in Pavia, Italy notes a positive effect on insulin sensitivity and glycemic status.

 Treatment of Goitre

This is a swelling of the Thyroid gland caused by Iodine deficiency, treatment of Goitre was one of the original uses of Bladderwrack. Since the 19th century, doctors have recognized it as an excellent Iodine source.

 For Vegans and Vegetarians

Supplementing Bladderwrack is an especially good idea for those who don’t eat meat. It contains Vitamin B12 along with iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, minerals, trace metals, phenolics, phloroglucinol, fucophorethols, phlorotannins, mucopolysaccharides, algin, lipids, and other important nutrients that Vegans and Vegetarians often need more of.

 Skin Beautification

The antioxidants in the Bladderwrack have beautification effects on the skin, clearing the complexion, blemishes, and smoothing wrinkles.

An older Japanese study noted improvements in the thickness and elasticity of the skin after five weeks of twice-daily dosage, it concludes

These results suggest that the Fucus vesiculosus extract possesses anti-aging activities and should be useful for a variety of cosmetics.

A 2012 paper out of the Oriflame Skin Research Institute in Stockholm, Sweden identified it as a pro-collagen anticellulite agent and concluded

The clinical study demonstrated a significant improvement in cellulite grading by a dermatologist after 8 and 12 weeks vs. vehicle, and ultrasound imaging showed a significant decrease in fat thickness compared with placebo after 12 weeks.

These studies suggest that you would want to use it for 5-12 weeks to reap its beautification benefits.

Gabriel on Amazon reports

This product is outstanding, really, helps with thyroid function, joints, and skin! I've been noticing my hair clearer, skin too, used to have some acne but after coupe months of Sea Moss from Infinity they are GONE. no joke. My nails grow lot faster and stronger. But putting that aside, perhaps one of the most important and undervalued benefits of this sea moss is its ability to help balance thyroid hormones.

Taryn on Amazon reports

So I had a skin rash for several months that suddenly started going away after using this product. Amazing product

 Vision Hack

Bladderwrack is a potent source of beta-carotene, fucoxanthin, and fucoidan which are regarded as the “eye nutrients of the future”. Two recent scientific papers suggest it could have a helpful effect on macular degeneration.

Fast shipping and product seems to work, normally in the morning I have really bad foot pain after the 2nd day of using it has eased a lot. My husband says the same for himself also we both have a little extra energy. Definitely worth trying.

Stephanie on Amazon

It’s only been a week and I’m already seeing results. I honestly feel great, a lot more happier and filled with so much energy. I’m not a morning person but I’ve been waking up early due to this thing so I’m happy. My only con with this is the fact that it takes away my appetite away and causes me not to eat.

Ana on Amazon

I immediately felt the surge of wellness and energy on my second day of intake! Very effective in detoxification, I was encountering flare ups again and my body wouldn’t take the strong antibiotics lately. This was effective in healing my colon. Highly recommended!

Irish Sea Moss 350Infinite Age in the USA offers Sea Moss Advance.

  • Which combines Bladderwrack with Burdock Root, and Irish Sea Moss.
  • Bladderwrack has a pungent, strong taste that many do not like - “It tastes like the ocean” some report, which is why ours is capsuled.
  • Two capsules contain 500 milligrams of Bladderwrack, which is the clinically efficacious dose.

This sea moss is a multi-vitamin in a moss, it’s nutrient-dense, with 92 of the 102 minerals that make up the human body.

  • Wildcrafted, harvested from the sea, not “factory farmed” in a swimming pool.
  • Verified as pure and non-toxic by an American spectroscopy lab (view COA).
  • Contains a number of Iodine’s cofactors, Vitamins A, C, E, F, and K along with B vitamins, magnesium protein, beta-carotene, pectin, and sulfur which empower immunity.

 Usage & Dosage

  • 500 milligrams daily, non-toxic up to 4 grams daily.
  • Use 5-6 times weekly, with breaks every 4 months.
  • Can be taken on an empty or full stomach.
  • Iodine can be energizing so it’s not recommended to take it before bed.

 Side Effects

  • A 2011 Canadian clinical trial commented: Consumption of the seaweed capsules was not associated with any adverse event.
  • A 2018 animal study failed to find any risks associated with it.
  • As far as I’m concerned, the biggest negative with Bladderwrack is its not-exactly-pleasant-sounding name. If there was ever a great natural medicine badly in need of a renaming, this is it. Bladderwrack sounds like a terrifying mythological sea monster!
