In architecture, there is a fascinating principle called Tensegrity, a portmanteau of tensional integrity. It describes a structure that maintains its shape not through heavy, stacked pillars, but through a continuous web of tension. Think of a suspension bridge or a geodesic dome: if you push on one side, the entire structure distributes the stress to remain stable.
Well, it turns out the human face is a tensegrity structure. We aren't just skin draped over bone; we are a complex network of fascia and muscle that 'floats' in a delicate balance of tension. When that tension becomes imbalanced, we don't just get tired--we age. Our faces literally begin to collapse inward.
I'm a nearly 41-year-old new-ish dad, so sleep deprivation and some 'facial collapse' are expected. But this might surprise you; I recently took a selfie and realized my crow's feet had essentially vanished. This has a lot to do with some applied Tensegrity techniques I've been doing to 're-wire' this facial tension.
