Biohacker ReviewVitamin C is sort of a Nootropic

In this review, I'll tell you about why I take Ascorbic Acid daily and break down the recent science that has been done on it.

Every day, I make a tangy Biohacker beverage for my wife and I composed of powdered Creatine, NALT, and Ascorbic Acid with which I wash down whatever capsuled Nootropics or supplements I'm taking in the midmorning. Ascorbic Acid doesn't have much of a subjective effect itself; I take it mostly because I really, really hate getting sick during the wintertime, and taking it daily we've managed to almost totally avoid illness in the past few winters (with the exception of a very mild case of COVID last year.)

Biohacker ReviewThe pure pleasure of pooping compels me!

I have to admit to an odd morning custom Mrs. Roseland I have, in the midmorning we chit-chat (for just a little) about our morning movements in the bathroom. And consistently our pooping is pleasantly emptying thanks to the magnesium we took the previous evening. It's become one supplement that we won't go without!

Many Biohackers report a range of experiential benefits from Magnesium like relaxation, better sleep, and brainpower but for me, it mostly just helps in the digestion department, so let's look at the recent science done on Magnesium...

Scientific overview

In the past five years alone over 250 human clinical trials have been done with Magnesium. Bis-Glycinate is regarded by some as the best Magnesium form because of its high bioavailability, so I think it's a great choice. In case you're wondering, Magnesium Bis-Glycinate and Magnesium Glycinate are basically the same thing.

Two similar 12-week American studies looked at the combined effects of Magnesium and Vitamin D. In the first study 95 overweight participants (not hard to find in America!) were given 360 mg magnesium glycinate + 1000 IU vitamin D 3 × daily, which improved blood pressure regulation. The magnesium supplementation also improved the absorption of Vitamin D. This study validated the Biohacker best practice of Vitamin D in the morning and Magnesium in the evenings. The combination did not however influence markers of bone turnover or glycemic control, according to the second study.

A 2021 Iranian study also showed that Vitamin D and Magnesium improved the mental health status of attention-deficit hyperactive children. The combination of 50,000 IU of Vitamin D a week and 6 milligrams per kilo (of child weight) a day improved behavioral function after just 8 weeks.

vitamin D and magnesium

A smaller American study of pregnant women found it outperformed a placebo in preventing painful leg cramps. Legs cramps are a seriously unpleasantly way to wake up at 3 AM, and a sign that you need a bit more Magnesium in your system.

A French study compared Magnesium, B Vitamins, Rhodiola, and Green Tea (L-Theanine) - typically Nootropic stack ingredients - to placebo with a group of about a hundred otherwise healthy, yet stressed adults. The study concluded...

[The stack] was effective in relieving stress on Days 14 and 28 in chronically stressed but otherwise healthy individuals. This finding, in addition to the observation that [the stack] may diminish pain perception, underlines its potential benefits for patients suffering from pain, in whom comorbidities such as stress and sleep disorders are frequent.

So it effectively relieves stress for even chronically irate people in just two to three weeks, that's good news! For some reason this has me thinking about a stripper I went on a date with many years ago who had a major road rage issue - she was yelling at other cars all the way to the date spot! And, interestingly, A significant reduction in sensitivity to cold pain was observed on the stack - it might be a good stack if you take cold showers for the challenge, like me!

French study

Speaking of stacking, a 2021 study of 86 Iranians found...

Zinc [30 milligrams], vitamin A [one 25,000 IU capsule twice a week], and magnesium supplementation [250 milligrams] may have beneficial effects in patients with hypothyroidism and in diseases associated with hyperthyroidism.

Here's a weird one, apparently in South Korea, they have robots performing prostate removal surgeries, which is called a robotic radical prostatectomy and is about as pleasant to experience as it sounds! And Magnesium seems to make this operation a bit more sufferable, according to a 2021 study. So, gents, take good care of your prostate so future you does not have to worry about ProstrateTron making a move on your booty!

You've no doubt, heard a lot about inflammation, how inflammation is near the cause of almost all health problems. Recently, I went down the confusing Cholesterol research rabbit hole. The conclusion I reached is that cholesterol is neither good nor bad itself, and not worth trying to change by eating fewer eggs, butter, or whatever dumb advice you might find Googling it. Concerning Cholesterol levels instead hint at system inflammation. Good news from a recent American study, magnesium deficiency seems to be a major cause of systemic inflammation. From its abstract...

The [Magnesium Depletion Score] serves as a promising measure in identifying individuals with magnesium deficiency who may benefit from increased intake of magnesium to reduce risks of systemic inflammation and [cardiovascular disease] mortality

So supplement Magnesium daily and enjoy that tasty omelet!

Magnesium Depletion Score

Powdered vs capsule

Pills capsules bottle supplementsPersonally, I prefer to take my Magnesium powdered in the evening before bed. It takes just a minute to mix it with water and it doesn't taste bad or stick in my teeth. I'd suggest picking up a few other forms (Citrate, Malate, and Gluconate) from PureBulk.com and mixing them as they all work a little differently to empower your biology while you slumber.

Purity-verified with COA

Creatine Monohydrate - COA

The final thing I like about this Magnesium is that it's verified as pure with a certificate of analysis from an accredited American lab. This evidence of purity is something you should demand that your local supplement shop or the sellers on Amazon likely can't provide.

Magnesium bis-glycinate, also known as magnesium glycinate, is a chelated form of magnesium. The chelation process binds a magnesium salt to the amino acid glycine, which allows the magnesium to cross the intestinal barrier for better absorption and stability. Magnesium is essential for all cells in the body to function. It is a cofactor for more than 600 reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, energy metabolism, muscle movements, and DNA synthesis.

Pure Niacin

Biohacker ReviewMakes me red enough to guide Santa's sleigh!

Niacin, which is also called Vitamin B3, is an experiential Nootropic (an experience that you might NOT love!) with a range of Biohacking benefits that make the flush well worth it! This is the immediate release form of this vitamin, not a timed or slow release, I find the skin flush it induces slightly uncomfortable. The trade-off for that passing discomfort is boosting NAD, which has an expansive range of anti-aging benefits - from DNA repair to mental health support.

I did use my self-quantification tools while flushed on Niacin. I took a Heart Rate Variability measurement with my HeartMath device and did brain training to see if it boosted my cognitive powers.

Mediocre HRV on Niacin  Above average dual n-back brain training score of 4.1 on Niacin

I took it in a moderate 500-milligram dose, which is appropriate for otherwise healthy people who just want to support their NAD levels. In scientific literature, it looks like larger doses of 1 or 2 grams are appropriate for people taking it to treat various conditions.

Can't afford NMN? Take Niacin

Home Wifi EMFs 5G

As a Biohacker, you probably don't fall for the Big Telcom propaganda - that EMFs are harmless. Hopefully, you understand that an important part of staying healthy is supplementing some things to keep your biology resilient as it constantly faces nearly impossible-to-avoid harmful radiation emitted by smartphones, WiFi routers, and 5G towers. The book EMF*D by Dr. Mercola explains...

EMF exposure can cause your cells to become NAD+ depleted. PARP is ordinarily the largest consumer of NAD+ in your body, and if you have a large EMF exposure you can radically reduce your NAD+ levels. And when your cells become NAD+ depleted, it also impacts your mitochondria by lowering an NAD coenzyme called NADH, which is necessary for your mitochondria to produce ATP. Another consequence of PARP sucking up most of your NAD+ is that it depletes the supply for other vital longevity proteins, called sirtuins, that require NAD+ to function. If PARP is consuming most of your NAD+, your sirtuins will not have enough NAD+ to run and your aging will be accelerated dramatically. (p. 151)

If you're not going to give up your smartphone and WiFi, you should regularly supplement your NAD+ levels. The best way to do this is to take NMN - which I call the epigenetic vitamin for smarter genes - but it's not cheap (a monthly supply at a moderate daily dose of 500 milligrams will run you around $30). If you're ballin' on a budget, 500 milligrams of Niacin daily costs just $12 in convenient capsuled form (it's even cheaper powdered, this $6, 100-gram supply would last over six months).

Niacin powder

But empowering your DNA repair system is far from the only thing Niacin does...

Scientific overview

Back in 2017, I published a deep-dive investigation on Vitamin B3 and called it a Vitamin of Hope for a Hurting World. Since then a lot of good science has been done; over a hundred items of human science are on Pubmed with 16 clinical trials published specifically on Niacin, which I'll summarize here.

A 2019 study of 124 American students suggests it's something of a social smart drug; 100 milligrams beat a placebo in enhancing the speech performance of the subjects. The abstract of the study hints that it's a public speaking biohack for the anxious.

A small study done at the Boston Children's Hospital confirmed previous research indicating that it's a growth hormone hack in amounts as little as 500 milligrams.

Good news for diabetics in a 2020 meta-analysisEight [randomized controlled trials] comprised a total of 2110 patients and found that niacin supplementation could improve lipid profiles without affecting the glycemic levels for patients.

Cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease mortality, and other cardiovascular events, including acute coronary syndrome, fatal and nonfatal stroke, revascularization, and major adverse cardiac events.

Heart health study

It's an essential supplement for expecting mothers according to a recent Australian meta-analysis that crunched the data of a bunch of studies totaling over 35,000 women. From its abstract...

The meta-analysis showed that expectant mothers with an insufficient niacin intake were significantly more likely to have babies with congenital abnormalities...

In case you're curious, the top natural dietary sources are liver, chicken breast, tuna, turkey, anchovies, and wild-caught salmon. So supplementing Niacin is a good idea for women with more vegetarian diets.

A Spanish study, observes that 2 grams taken with a high-fat meal improves glucose response for those with metabolic syndrome.

Great news from a German study, drinking coffee boosts Niacin! The study subjects drank 500 milliliters a day, which might be a lot for some people (that's two larger coffees a day).

An Italian meta-analysis looked at Niacin in the Central Nervous System, it has a role in...

An epiphany cofactor?

Something to add to my personal review of Niacin, after I had been taking Niacin for a couple of weeks I had the most mind-blowing day of my life as a Biohacker in 12 years and a major epiphany (this is something I'm still processing and will be sharing a lot more about soon!) Having studied the work of Abram Hoffer on how Niacin enables transformative breakthroughs for alcoholics and addicts I question if Niacin had something to do with this Satori experience I had in the nascent days of 2024.

Powdered vs capsuled

Pills capsules bottle supplements

It's pretty affordable from PureBulk.com, both in powdered and capsuled form. Powdered supplements are not a lot of fun to take, so I just add Niacin to the tasty probiotic Bulgarian yogurt I enjoy daily, it doesn't taste like much.

Purity-verified with COA

Creatine Monohydrate - COA

The final thing I like about this Niacin is that it's verified as pure with a certificate of analysis from an accredited American lab. This evidence of purity is something you should demand that your local supplement shop or the sellers on Amazon likely can't provide.

Niacin, also called nicotinic acid or Vitamin B3, is a water-soluble member of the B complex family. Niacin is one of the most stable B vitamins, as it is resistant to the effects of heat, light, air, acid, and alkali. Niacin is critical for synthesizing coenzymes that play a role in hundreds of bodily functions. However, its primary role is to obtain usable energy from food by supporting the enzymes responsible for cellular metabolism. PureBulk's Niacin is the immediate release form of this vitamin, not a timed or slow release.
