The next day we noticed that the room was leaking water so we foolishly demanded a room upgrade and were moved to an even nicer room with an amazing view of the Caribbean. The next night three large security guards barged into our room and informed us that we would be leaving immediately. Ed was furious to be kicked out, especially after they made him pay a $500 fee for the destroyed furniture, as we stormed out of the hotel they informed us that the police had been called and we would be arrested. Fortunately, Ed had been sleeping with a local Mexican guy who taxied us around, he came and picked us up and the cops stopped us anyway and we had to bribe them. We had to find somewhere to stay, it’s next to impossible to find somewhere to stay in Cancun in the middle of spring break. We drove from hotel to hotel inquiring and we finally checked into what was probably one of the most opulent resorts in the whole town, Agua Cancun where the decadence continued, in between room service and the two palatial suites Ed rented we ran up a $3000 bill in two nights!
At Agua Cancun, each opulent room was stocked every day with VOSS water. So the brand has got a special place in my heart, and their glass bottles are the best! I buy a bottle of VOSS every couple of years as their bottles are nearly indestructible, and make you look like a baller!

It’s a very modern, cosmopolitan, mainstream thing to think about oneself that I wouldn’t regard as a major red flag of a “blender” — a woman that you should avoid getting involved with. But I draw a distinction between genuinely religious women and “spiritual” women. Organized religion and church attendance imbue some concrete morality, humility, self-control, and fear of the metaphysical consequences of sin, whereas a lot of Eastern and new age spiritual dalliances are merely dressed up navel-gazing.

Quick story: Once upon a time, I think, I made friends with a spy in Kyiv, Ukraine.
I was sitting at a cafe with my genial French roommate. An American guy who heard us speaking English approached us and offered some pretty unoriginal advice about which countries to try to pick up chicks in. He said he was a journalist and we chatted for a few minutes, I invited him to join us for sushi. He spoke Russian fluently and was very knowledgeable about the geopolitics of the former Soviet Union. My roommate kind of hit it off with him, and we hung out a couple of times. What makes me suspect that he was a spy was that he knew a lot about what was going on in that part of the world, yet looking on his Twitter and online presence, I really couldn’t find much paper trail of his work as a journalist. He was constantly regaling us with stories of his misadventures and close calls around the former USSR. He also mentioned that his ex-wife worked for the Russian FSB internal security services, this is like a slightly nicer modern version of the KGB.
He actually invited us to join him in driving out east to Donbas to cover the front and interview some soldiers. In retrospect, I kind of wish I had accompanied him because then I could say that “I’ve been to war” but the weather was so bloody dreadful that weekend that I declined the offer.
One night, the maybe-a-spy and I were carousing in a bar. I used the camera phone opener, and sure enough, my freelance journalist friend made sure not to be captured in the candid photo with the girls we were chatting with.

This is a paraphrasing of my favorite line from Almost a novel by philosopher, Stefan Molyneux. It’s a family drama, a tale of two families, English and German, caught up in the terribly repetitive momentum of history - you might think of it as Atlas Shrugged meets East of Eden set in inter-war Europe. In the last few years, I’ve read a few of the classics by Steinbeck and Jack London. Almost is of the same caliber in its capturing of human nature.
